The Laurel Board of Education announced Wednesday the reinstatement of Superintendent Shawn Larrimore after he was charged with driving under the influence in May.

"The Board has thoroughly reviewed the situation and believes in Dr. Larrimore's dedication to personal and professional development," their statement said. "We are confident in his ability to lead our district with integrity and commitment to the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community."

Larrimore was driving on Route 13 around 11:30 p.m. May 11 when he didn't move over as he passed a police officer conducting a traffic stop, a Laurel Police Department news release said. Another officer followed him and noticed he was driving erratically and had expired registration, police said.

When the officer pulled him over and arrested him on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, he refused a chemical test, police said.

Brent Nichols was the only Laurel Board of Education member to return phone calls requesting a comment on the arrest. He pointed out that "changing a superintendent is quite an ordeal."

Following Nichols' comment, the Board of Education released a statement saying Larrimore would "be away from his duties as superintendent for an indefinite amount of time." As per policy, disciplinary actions would not be disclosed, the statement said.

"During his absence, Larrimore has taken significant time to reflect, grow, and take important steps to ensure he meets the expectations of the Board and the community as a whole," the most recent statement said.

Larrimore will return to leading the western Sussex County school district of about 2,600 students July 8.
