A prosecutor in Ohio was terminated from his position after he allegedly bit a man’s finger off during a road rage incident that began when the victim honked his car horn at the county attorney.

Now-former Greene County Assistant Prosecutor Christopher Murray is being investigated and was fired a week after the alleged assault , authorities confirmed to Law&Crime.

According to an incident report obtained by Law&Crime, the alleged violent incident took place at about 12:30 a.m. on June 30, 2024, when officers with the Riverside Police Department responded to a call regarding a reported “fight in progress” on Woodman Drive at the overpass of U.S. Route 35, which is about 210 miles southwest of Cleveland, Ohio.

Police said they received multiple calls from passersby advising that “one of the subjects had the other in a headlock.”

“Dispatch advised that one caller said there was a lot of blood and a finger was bitten off,” the arrest report states.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders said they encountered a 43-year-old man — later identified as the victim — standing outside of his parked car with “a lot of blood on him and the ground.” Medics were called when it was determined that the victim’s had his “finger bitten off,” police wrote.

Photos obtained by Law&Crime showed the victim’s middle finger had been bitten off at about at about the distal interphalangeal joint.

The victim told police that he was stopped behind another vehicle at a red light on Woodman Drive. When the light turned green, the victim said that the vehicle in front of him did not move, so he “laid on his horn.”

The driver of that vehicle — later identified as Murray — exited his car and walked back to the victim’s car where he allegedly told the victim that he wanted to fight.

The victim explained that his car windows did not work, so he began to open his driver side door, which is when Murray allegedly “pulled it open and started to fight” the victim.

The two men “tussled to the ground,” and at some point, the victim told police he “was able to get on top of [Murray], which is when he states [Murray] bit down on his finger.”

The victim said that Murray dropped his cellphone on the ground before getting back in his car and driving away. Police put the phone on “airplane mode” and placed it into evidence.

Police said they were able to locate the victim’s missing middle finger beneath his parked car.

Riverside police confirmed to Law&Crime that Murray has not been arrested as his case is pending before a grand jury.

Greene County Prosecuting Attorney David D. Hayes confirmed to Law&Crime that he did not learn about the allegations against his subordinate for more than a week, at which point he quickly took action.

“As Greene County Prosecuting Attorney, I became aware on July 8, 2024, of an ongoing criminal investigation in Montgomery County regarding my employee Christopher Murray,” Hayes wrote in an emailed statement. “Murray has been on leave since July 9, 2024, from his position as an Assistant Prosecutor in Greene County. He has not been in the office, or representing my office in Court, since July 9, 2024. After due consideration, I terminated Christopher Murray’s employment with the Greene County Prosecutor’s Office.”
