The Seekonk Police Department is in mourning following the tragic loss of one of its own officers.

Police Officer Kourtny DeForitis, 28, hailing from East Taunton, has been identified as one of the two victims who tragically lost their lives in an off-duty motorcycle accident in Somerset early Saturday morning. Chief David Enos made the solemn announcement via Facebook on Sunday.

The fatal incident occurred around 1:15 a.m. when the motorcycle, in which DeForitis was a passenger, collided with another vehicle, subsequently crashing into a telephone pole at the Route 103 rotary. Daniel Glover, 44, the motorcycle's driver from Easton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

DeForitis, who graduated from the Cape Cod Municipal Police Academy in 2021, dedicated over two years of her service as a community outreach officer within the department's patrol division. The Seekonk Police Department, serving nearly 16,000 residents in the Bristol County town bordering Rhode Island, noted DeForitis's special connection with the local youth. She often engaged with them at schools and community events, her bright smile and infectious laughter leaving a lasting impression.

Preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation, led by the Somerset police, suggest that the motorcycle entered the rotary in the wrong direction, leading to the collision with the other vehicle, according to Somerset Chief Todd Costa.

DeForitis was transported to a local hospital by Somerset emergency responders but was sadly pronounced dead. The driver of the other vehicle was also taken to a nearby medical facility as a precaution.

Assistance in the investigation is being provided by the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section Unit and detectives from the Bristol County District Attorney's Office. The investigation remains active and ongoing.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, the Seekonk Police Department expressed its deepest condolences to Officer DeForitis's family and friends, sharing in their grief as they mourn the loss of a dedicated member of their team. The post concluded with the poignant message, "Rest in peace, badge 3334, we'll take the watch from here."
