KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez announced today that a Lawrence man was sentenced to 21 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections for his involvement in a 2023 aggravated battery charge.

Court documents say that Major C. Edwards Jr., 45, of Lawrence broke into a 19-year-old woman’s bedroom, while naked, and tackled her to the ground. Another woman was in the apartment at the time of the break-in and was able to intervene and alert authorities.

At the time of this incident, Edwards was on parole for a 2006 voluntary manslaughter conviction in Douglas County.

“The defendant chose to commit yet another violent and heinous act,” District Attorney Valdez said.

“I am committed to protecting our community and ensuring that justice is served for all victims.”

Assistant District Attorney Samantha Foster represented the State of Kansas. The matter was investigated by the Lawrence Kansas Police Department. Judge Stacey Donovan also sentenced Edwards to 12 months of post-release supervision.
