Bear conflicts give rise to new strategies in Leavenworth
Leavenworth is a major tourist attraction in the Northwest, drawing more than two million visitors a year. Also drawn to Leavenworth: Black bears, the native Cascades animals who normally shy away from people, but can become habituated over time by the easy availability of wasted food, unsecured garbage cans and other attractants.
Managing bear encounters in the East Cascades
When conflicts emerge in the town of Leavenworth between humans and the black bears that share the Upper Valley, Rich Beausoleil is the Washington Fish and Wildlife officer likely to respond. But as Rich told NCWLIFE, a better solution is for humans to avoid tempting bears with garbage and easy food opportunities in the first place.
