Significant progress noted as Melvern Lake entities recover from June 28 tornado
Melvern Lake has seen a lot of progress with repairs after tornadic activity late last week. The marina, hard-hit by an EF-0 tornado June 28, is reporting access to all of the dry storage facility has been restored and slip renters for several docks — the south side of D, all of E and all of Y — have access to their boats. The parts and service shop is tentatively set to reopen Friday.
'They leave me with nothing': Former ESU student concerned with Emporia healthcare amid 12-year legal battle with providers
For 12 years, Emeline Fuller, a local artist and 2021 Emporia State graduate, has endured a legal battle for her life. The catalyst? A 2012 lymph node biopsy and cat scratch disease diagnosis resulting in a medical bill she simply couldn’t afford. Since May of that year, she has been sued 10 times by Emporia health care providers and has had wage garnishments released and reordered for bills she says she “just can’t pay,”.
City of Emporia Fireworks Display – July 4th
The City of Emporia’s Fourth of July fireworks are scheduled for Thursday, July 4, 2024. The display will be best viewed from the Emporia State University practice fields on the north end of campus and inside Welch Stadium. The soccer pitch on the north end of campus will be closed to the public.

Fireworks are a fabulous time for lots of us, but not all. Fireworks can trigger post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms for people, notably veterans or current military service personnel. KVOE’s monthly update from the Department of Veterans Affairs this week was largely geared towards information involving women’s services, including mental wellness for the Fourth. East Central Kansas Model T Club
The East Central Kansas Model, T Ford Club, meets the second Thursday of the month. The ECKMT’s will meet at 6:30 Thursday July 11th, in the conference room of the Burlington Kansas Library. The Library is located on HWY 75 in Burlington. Pizza will be served and members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share with the meal which will be eaten before the meeting.
24th and Prairie waterline replacement project set to go under I-35
Work on Emporia’s extensive 24th and Prairie water main replacement project is closing in on a significant milestone. Crews are setting up to bore under Interstate 35 as early work continues. As part of that process, they will need to build a pipe from the east drive of the Emporia Pavilions shopping center to Apple Lane. Additional work involves a smaller water line on the south side of West 24th that will run west from Apple Lane to Emporia Presbyterian Manor.

Emporia City Commissioners pause decision on revenue-neutral rate until mid-month following study session Wednesday
Emporia City Commissioners will take a short pause to allow for information gathering before setting the city’s revenue-neutral rate for the 2025 fiscal year. During their regular study session on Tuesday, commissioners reviewed options for setting the RNR not to exceed limit with four options presented by City Treasurer Janet Harouff. Of the four options, commissioners mainly focused on options two and three.
‘Keep moving forward’ the short-term mantra for Kansas Turnpike travelers after debut of cashless tolling
“Keep moving forward” is a mantra many of us use for life matters, whether those or other words are used. It’s also the mantra — at least for now — for travelers on the Kansas Turnpike, now that cashless tolling has started. Chief Executive Officer Steve Hewitt mentioned why that approach was important for Turnpike purposes on KVOE’s Talk of Emporia this week:
City Commission deliberates mill levy options for 2025 budget
The Emporia City Commission reviewed options for setting the mill levy for the 2025 fiscal year during their Tuesday study session. The City’s Revenue-Neutral Rate (RNR), as calculated by the County Clerk, is 42.667. In comparison, the final mill levy for 2023 taxes was 44.604. The proposed budget for 2025 includes allocations of 9.5 mills for Bond and Interest, 5 mills for the Library, and .005 mills for Industrial purposes. The General Fund mills will be adjusted based on the total mills approved, with the budget assuming a 3% property tax delinquency rate.
