WEATHER: Storm chances decreased, risk outlook eliminated for July 4
Chances of overall thunderstorm activity and severe weather have declined as the holiday has progressed. Early Thursday, there was a moderate chance of storms and a marginal severe weather risk for wind. As of early afternoon, the overall risk had been reduced to slight, with isolated to widely scattered heavy rainfall possible. As was the case in the early-morning hours, the projected time for rainfall remains 4-8 pm.
Significant progress noted as Melvern Lake entities recover from June 28 tornado
Melvern Lake has seen a lot of progress with repairs after tornadic activity late last week. The marina, hard-hit by an EF-0 tornado June 28, is reporting access to all of the dry storage facility has been restored and slip renters for several docks — the south side of D, all of E and all of Y — have access to their boats. The parts and service shop is tentatively set to reopen Friday.

East Central Kansas Model T Club
The East Central Kansas Model, T Ford Club, meets the second Thursday of the month. The ECKMT’s will meet at 6:30 Thursday July 11th, in the conference room of the Burlington Kansas Library. The Library is located on HWY 75 in Burlington. Pizza will be served and members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share with the meal which will be eaten before the meeting.
Arraingment ahead in Emporia aggravated robbery case
Pretrial and arraignment is the next legal step in an aggravated robbery case moving through Lyon County District Court. Tyler Stephen Seifert, age 39 of Topeka, was set for an Aug. 9 hearing date after his preliminary hearing Wednesday. He has charged with six counts, including two of aggravated assault and one each of kidnapping, aggravated robbery, aggravated battery and criminal discharge of a firearm.
Formal charges filed against alleged driver in Emporia-based pursuits from Tuesday
Court appearances are coming next week for one of the two people arrested after a pair of law enforcement pursuits originating in Emporia earlier this week. Frederick Beecher Hogue, age 37 of Hollister, Missouri, faces four total counts — two for flee and elude and one each of interfering with law enforcement and driving with a suspended license. Hogue is also charged separately with being a fugitive from Jasper County, Missouri, for allegedly possessing a controlled substance and resisting arrest.
Busy schedule continues for ESU Flute Choir
Early July is an extremely busy time for the Emporia State University Flute Choir. Already, the group has partnered with Arby’s on Monday for a fundraiser sending a portion of the restaurant’s proceeds to the choir. A similar fundraiser is coming Monday at Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers.
