Scheffler picked a good time to expand his trophy case. An Olympic gold would be a nice addition
SAINT QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France (AP) — Scottie Scheffler decided to build a golf room at his Dallas house earlier this year. He had to keep adding a few shelves as the trophies piled up. An Olympic gold medal wouldn't take up a lot of room, but it would be a nice addition. He is the favorite at the men's competition at Le Golf National, just as he has been a favorite at every tournament this year. But there's been a late challenge from two-time major winner Xander Schauffele. Scheffler sees some similarities between them. Neither gets too high or low and consistency is their hallmark.

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. — After getting past the third-seeded Trenton Generals, 2-0, Friday night in the Southern Division play-in game to advance to Saturday’s inaugural East Coast Collegiate Baseball League semifinals at Memorial Stadium, the Mercer Mammoths were happy to be there with the league’s top team, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Miners.
Anthracite Model Railroad Society to hold open house this weekend
The Anthracite Model Railroad Society will hold its Annual Christmas in July Open House from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 27 and 28, at 1056 Hanover Court, Hazle Twp. The event allows the public the opportunity to view HO gauge model trains operating through the City of Hazleton and surrounding towns such as Harleigh, Weatherly, Mauch Chunk, Bethlehem Steel and Pottsville. History buffs who enjoy viewing old structures that no longer exist can see numerous structures on the railroad that have either changed or have been razed. Attendees may bring cameras. Rockin' the River concert series concludes with Lanie Gardner
Country performer Lanie Gardner headlined the final concert of this summer's Rockin' the River series in Riverfront Park in Wilkes-Barre Friday. Gardner's song “Chasing the Wind” is featured on the soundtrack of the recently released movie "Twisters." The free Rockin' the River concerts are presented by Visit Luzerne County and the Riverfront Parks Committee.
LCTA replacing bus stops in Newport Twp., Nanticoke with on-demand van service
The Luzerne County Transportation Authority is eliminating traditional bus service in Newport Twp. and significantly reducing stops in Nanticoke with plans to launch an on-demand “microtransit van service” pilot program.

Paige Neely is celebrating her 13th birthday today. She is the daughter of Stephanie and Albert Neely, the granddaughter of Dawn Keefe and William Keefe of Wilkes-Barre and the late Howard Neely of Plymouth and the late Cora Neely. She is a great-granddaughter of Ronald Melodick of Plymouth. Paige has twin brothers, Jesse and Joshua, 19.
Swoyersville Chicken Wing Fling held
The Swoyersville Chicken Wing Fling came back this weekend. The event, which benefits the Swoyersville Parks and Recreation Board, was held Saturday and Sunday at Roosevelt Park at the corner of Tripp and Scott streets. This year’s event featured around 10 vendors specializing in chicken wings. A panel of judges sampled each in a blind taste test to determine winners in a variety of categories.

Joanne Salsman
Joanne Salsman, 71, of Golden Hill passed away at her home on Thursday morning, July 25, 2024 while surrounded by her loving family. Born in Sayre, on Sept. 2, 1952, Joanne was the daughter of the late Vera Woodruff (d. Aug. 1, 1995) and Howard Salsman, Sr. (d. Dec. 11, 1977). After growing up in the Laceyville area, she would first find employment as a glass blower at Nepp Wire in Meshoppen before finding her calling as owner of the Trail Inn, also in Meshoppen.
