OPD: Intoxicated Man Allegedly Drove While Revoked
An intoxicated Ottumwa man allegedly drove while revoked. 37-year-old Wansa Walter was charged with drunk drive revocation and OWI – 3rd or subsequent offense. On July 19 at 11:44 p.m, court records say Walter was driving a vehicle on South Sheridan Avenue. Officers observed Walter to have watery blood shot eyes, an odor of alcohol, and unsteady balance. Officers say Walter admitted that he was previously drinking an alcoholic beverage.
Couple Arrested After Staying in Motel Without Paying
A couple was arrested after staying in a motel without paying, according to the Ottumwa Police Department. 30-year-old Mercedes Reisch of Eldon (Left) was charged with 3rd degree theft – 2 prior convictions – property not exceeding $750, possession of controlled substance – methamphetamine – 1st offense, and burglary – 3rd degree – non vehicle.

The Washington Chamber of Commerce has welcomed three new members. Northside Diner, East Washington Auto Wash, and Walmart. Northside Diner is only open for lunch, but they are soon opening for dinner too: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday:10:30 am-3:00 pm. They are closed on Wednesdays and Sundays. East Washington Auto Wash is open 24 hours, 7 days a week, and Walmart has all of your household or outdoor items and groceries. (Atlantic) Thousands of bicycle enthusiasts hailing from coast to coast and abroad are traveling across Iowa for RAGBRAI 2024. The trip started in Glenwood on Sunday, spent Sunday night in Red Oak, and headed out on Monday morning through Elliott, Griswold, and Lewis for an overnight stay in Atlantic. Rare unplowed land near Ames may be how Iowa prairie looked 150 years ago
(Radio Iowa) – Researchers recently discovered what’s known as a “remnant prairie” at the Iowa State University Horticulture Research Station and they’re working to restore it. Remnant prairies have never been plowed or completely converted into non-native species. Only about zero-point-one percent of this original habitat remains in Iowa, though it once covered nearly 80-percent of the state. Nick Howell is superintendent for the horticulture research station. “This was found as a fluke,” Howell says. “When I started here in 2006, you couldn’t even get to it. It was just completely full of scrub brush.”

Creston police report pair of early Monday morning drug arrests
(Creston) -- A pair of Creston suspects face drug charges following their arrests in separate incidents early Monday morning. The Creston Police Department says 44-year-old Ronnee Colleen Abel of Creston was arrested shortly after 1 a.m. for possession of a controlled substance, non-marijuana, 3rd offense, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Authorities say the arrest occurred in the 500 block of West Adams Street.

The Des Moines Register is there as Gov. Robert Ray returns from an October 1979 visit to Southeast Asia, where he toured refugee camps in Thailand. "I watched people die," Ray tells the Register for the Oct. 30 edition, saying the conditions were so horrific he doesn't know how to describe them. The Republican governor, who had so far resettled 4,000 refugees from the Vietnam War to Iowa, acknowledges backlash for his efforts, "but this is a matter of life and death." Ray, joined by Iowa leaders including Register President and Editor Michael Gartner, forms the Iowa SHARES charity, which raises hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy food and other aid to assist the refugees in Thailand.
Des Moines' Bethel A.M.E. Church celebrates 115 years with reunion spanning generations
DES MOINES, Iowa — A church that says it's the oldest historical Black church on Des Moines' east side is celebrating a major anniversary. Bethel African Methodist Espiscopal Church, led by Pastor Josephine Wolder, is 115 years old. Over the weekend, it celebrated the momentous occasion with special events. On Saturday, there was a Praise Team Dance Celebration featuring teams from a dozen historic Black churches in Des Moines. A worship celebration was held Sunday with a special reunion choir featuring current and past Bethel A.M.E. members.
