Charlotte Fire recovers body after tree topples apartment building.
During the early hours of the morning, the Charlotte Fire Department responded to a tree that had fallen on a three-story apartment building located on Commonwealth Ave. Sadly, one body was recovered during the search. Over a dozen fire units arrived at the scene, and the call was upgraded to a tree-down rescue upon reports of trapped occupants. Charlotte Fire Engine 8 was the first to arrive and began evacuating the building. A rescue group was swiftly organized to aid in the search for occupants. The building's instability required extensive shoring to prevent collapse during the rescue operation. At around 2:05 a.m., a person was rescued from a third-floor apartment and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Tragically, a second victim was found deceased in the same apartment. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has taken over the scene for a death investigation, with the cause of death to be determined by the Mecklenburg County Coroner's Office.
