    Union County library events for August

    Union County, Pa. — The Union County Library System, which includes the Public Library for Union County in Lewisburg, Herr Memorial Library in Mifflinburg, and West End Library in Laurelton, is hosting the following events in August.

    All programs are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Register to attend by calling 570-523-1172, visiting the library, or registering online. For additional information, visit the UCLS website .

    The Public Library for Union County

    Adult/Teen Programs

    • Mah Jongg Club

    Tuesdays: 1-3:30 p.m.

    Anyone interested in playing the American version of the ancient Chinese tile game are welcome to socialize and play.

    • English as a Second Language

    Monday, Aug. 5, 12, and 26: 12:30-2 p.m.

    Jeanne Crago, ESL Instructor from the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit, will help students of any language background with conversation, pronunciation, reading, and writing skills in English. Students of all levels are welcome.

    • August Artist Reception

    Monday, Aug. 5: 4-6 p.m.

    Join us at The Public Library for Union for an artist reception to experience the wonder of Nancy Cleaver, Donna Spangler, and Della Hutchison's artistry as they invite us to embrace the timeless allure of German fraktur, Medieval book arts, and calligraphy.

    • Kiwanis Builders Club

    Thursdays: 4-5 p.m.

    Builders Club is a student-led service club for students in middle school. The purpose of Builders Club is to develop leadership through service to the school and community. This is a teens and tweens event.

    • New Parents Group/Baby Bump

    First Saturday of each month: 10-11:30 a.m.

    Join us the first Saturday of each month for an informal meet up led by Doula Tasha Hall. Connect with fellow new parents and parents-to-be and discuss the joys and challenges of new parenthood.

    • National Night Out

    Tuesday, Aug. 6: 4-8:30 p.m.

    Join us at the National Night Out event and stop by the library's stand at St. Mary's Street Park!

    • Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Susquehanna Valley Lewisburg

    Monday, Aug. 19, 10 a.m to 4 p.m.

    Join members of the Quilting Guild for a day of quilting, sewing, and needle work. Bring your own materials. Those looking to attend all day are permitted to bring a bagged lunch and are responsible for the clean-up.

    • Master Gardeners — Q&A

    Monday, Aug. 19: 6:30-8 p.m.

    Have questions or concerns about gardening? Our Master Gardeners are here to help with all the answers and tips you need. Join us for a friendly and informative session where you can bring your gardening queries to our experts.

    • Intro to Microsoft Excel

    Monday, Aug. 26: 6-7 p.m.

    Learn the basics of Microsoft Excel from formatting cells to modifying charts and graphs. Participants are also introduced to simple spreadsheet formulas.

    Children's Programs

    • Baby Storytime

    Friday, Aug. 20 and 27: 11-11:30 a.m.

    A storytime based on the “Mother Goose on the Loose” program, which shows that children learn best through routine and repetition in a nurturing environment. Learn songs, rhymes, fingerplays, and simple ASL signs. For ages 0-2.

    • Toddler Storytime

    Notice: Toddler Storytime is discounted until further notice starting Aug. 1. The last Toddler Storytime will be on July 31. Play K – Cruise into Kindergarten will replace Preschool Storytime for two weeks from Aug. 6-15.     • Play K - Cruise into Kindergarten

    Aug. 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, and 15: 2-3 p.m.

    A series of programs that allow children entering kindergarten to “play kindergarten” using activities and materials around themes that align with PA Early Learning Standards. This program is funded by the Cruise into Kindergarten initiative with materials and curriculum provided by the Office of Commonwealth Libraries.

    • Preschool Storytime

    Tuesday, Aug. 20 and 27: 10-11 a.m.

    Join Miss Alicia to sing songs, read books, and learn some simple ASL signs centered around a different theme each week. For ages 3-5.

    • Rain Garden Story Walk

    Aug. 5-19: During library hours

    Enjoy an adventure reading and observing what is going on in the rain garden. Walk around the rain garden and read the book.

    • Meet the Author Night

    Friday, Aug. 9: 2-3 p.m.

    Meet children's author Cynthia Pflaum from Lewisburg. She will be reading her new book "Midsummer's Adventure. "Children attending will get a signed copy of her book.

    Programs for all ages

    • Peaches Fundraiser

    Orders due Aug. 17. Order pickup Aug. 21

    • Music in the Park

    Thursday, Aug. 1 and 15: 6:30 p.m.

    Join the Herr Memorial Library at the Mifflinburg Community Park for Music in the Park! We will have a food stand where you can purchase hot dogs, chips, baked goods, and beverages. Get some snacks and stay for the music or just stop in to say hello!

    • Teen Brunch

    Monday, Aug. 5: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

    Wake up late. Pack a Lunch. Do a different fun activity each week! The library will provide a dessert. This Monday's event will be Pelicans in the Park! Meet us at the Mifflinburg Park for an icy treat! This is an event for grades 6-12.• Teen Trivia NightMonday, Aug. 26: 3:30-4:30 p.m.Test your knowledge as we start a new school year! Compete with your teammates to win a fun prize! This is an event for grades 6-12.

    • Novel Thoughts Book Club

    Join fellow book lovers and discuss a new book each month. The book this month will be "The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store" by James McBride.

    • Adult Writers Group

    Thursday, Aug. 1: 5-6 p.m.

    Grow confidence in your writing skills, receive encouragement, and connect with other local writers. No experience is required, all are welcome!

    • Cross Stitch Club

    Monday, Aug. 5: 1 p.m.

    Want to learn how to cross-stitch? Learn the basics and complete an easy beginner's project. Already know how to cross-stitch? Work on a project to be displayed in the library. All skill levels are welcome!

    • Explore the Night Time Sky

    Tuesday, Aug. 6: 7 p.m.

    Join us after hours for a look at the stars and planets with Bucknell Physics professor Brian Garthwaite.

    • Special Stitches

    Wednesdays: 10-11 a.m.

    Connect with knitters and crocheters at the Library! Enjoy friendly conversation and enjoy tips and tricks as you work on your latest project. An instructor is on hand to help teach patrons who are new to knitting and crocheting.

    • Genealogy Club

    Wednesday, Aug. 28: 4-5:30 p.m.

    Research your family tree and get pointers about researching genealogy online.

    • International Food Day

    Saturday, Aug. 10: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. p.m.

    Let us take you on a culinary trip around the world on the last day of summer reading! Join the Herr staff and our Genealogy Club to sample foods worldwide and take home the recipes. Bring your favorite international food or food of your heritage!

    • Learning a Foreign Language Online

    Tuesday, Aug. 20: 4-5:30 p.m.

    Retired French teacher Sandy Hornberger will introduce Power Library's Transparent Language program and other free resources for learning a language online.

    • Chat with the Game Commission

    Thursday, Aug. 22 and Sept. 12: 5-6 p.m.

    A representative from the Pennsylvania Game Commission will be at the Herr Library to chat with the public about local concerns and issues like nuisance bears, invasive species, common wildlife diseases and so much more!

    • Safari Art

    Thursday, Aug. 1: During library hours

    Embark on a thrilling adventure at the library! Join us to create and paint your very own African safari animal. This event is for ages 2-12.

    • Friendship Pins and Bracelets

    Week of Monday, Aug. 12: During library hours

    Stop into the library and make a colorful pin or friendship bracelet to give to a friend on the first day of school!• Back to School Craft

    Stop into the library and make an easy craft to display this year's school photo!

    • Toddler and Preschool Fun Day

    Wednesday, Aug. 21: 10:30-11:30 a.m.

    The older kids are back to school today, so time for the little ones to play. Play games and have fun on our play equipment in the library's backyard. This event is for ages 0-5.• Preschool Discover StorytimeWednesday, Aug. 28: 10:30-11:30 a.m.Join a weekly storytime with Ms. Sheila for children 2-5 years of age and their parents/caregivers. Crafts, games, and hands-on activities are provided to reinforce the theme and engage the children in creative play and learning.

    • Children's Day at the West End Fair

    Saturday, Aug. 10: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. p.m.

    Stop in and visit our table at the West End Fair! We will have a craft for you to do and also have some books to give away. The library will be closed that day.

    • Mah Jongg

    Fridays: 1-3 p.m.

    Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. No experience is needed. An instructor is on hand to teach newcomers this tile-based game.

    • West End Readers

    Thursday, Aug. 8: 6-7 p.m.

    Connect with fellow book lovers as they discuss "The Boys in the Boat" by Daniel James Brown. Each month our group will select and discuss a new book.

    • Cooking with Friends

    Thursday, Aug. 22: 4-5 p.m.

    Bring a dish to share - German cuisine. Experience the joy of sharing delicious dishes. Join us for a culinary journey filled with laughter, flavors, and unforgettable memories.

    • Hospice: Wellspan Evangelical Community Hospital

    Tuesday, Aug. 27: 6-7 p.m.

    Our presentation will discuss the benefits of earlier referrals and discuss how Hospice focuses on caring for patients with life-limiting illness and their families to make the most of the time they have together. We will answer questions regarding but not limited to: What is Hospice of Evangelical? How does hospice care work? What services are provided? How are hospice services paid for? Will hospice take care of my loved one in their home? What if they are in a nursing home? Do you have to have cancer to be a hospice patient?

    Children's Programs

    • August Craft of the Month - Craft Grab Bag

    Month of August: During library hours

    We will be putting out odds and ends of leftover crafts for the children to choose from. One craft per child. Supplies are limited.• Preschool Story and Activity Time

    Tuesdays: 10:30 a.m.

    Join our storytime which includes a weekly theme with read-aloud stories, age-appropriate activities and crafts, musical instruments, and songs. Adults are offered a take-home paper with theme-related crafts, rhymes, snacks, and suggested getting ready for kindergarten activities. For children up to age five along with a parent or caregiver. Parents must stay with children during class.• Ice Cream Social and End of Summer Program Prize DrawingSaturday, Aug. 3: 1-3 p.m.Children who participated in the Summer Reading Program are invited to an Ice Cream Social. The prize drawing will take place at the Social and the children will be able to choose their final book prize.

    • Reading with Maverick

    Saturday, Aug. 31: 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

    Children can read their favorite books to our certified therapy dog, Maverick. One child is allowed at a time. A parent or guardian must remain with the child.

    • Cupcakes

    Thursday, Aug. 1: 4-5 p.m.

    Stop by and decorate your own cupcake! This is an event for children ages 3-12.
