    Obituary: Herbert Stanley Montgomery, 80

    Herbert Stanley Montgomery

    Herbert Stanley Montgomery, 80, of Lewisburg, WV, passed away Friday, June 28, 2024, at the Peyton Hospice House. Born May 5, 1944, in Lewisburg, WV, he was the son of the late Dr. John Fleshman and Edith Rothwell Montgomery.

    A graduate of Lewisburg High School and Bluefield State College, with a B.A. Degree, Mr. Montgomery was also a Master Electrician, Master Plumber, held an HVAC Classification 1, and an Amateur Radio Extra Class. A dedicated public servant, he served as the Director of Public Works for the City of Lewisburg, WV, for many years, during which time he greatly expanded the water system. Mr. Montgomery also farmed and owned and managed Montgomery Rental Property.

    Herbert was a member of Old Stone Presbyterian Church, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons and was an Elder. He was a member of the Greenbrier Historical Society and Lewisburg Lions Club. He also served on the Board of Directors of the WV Rural Water Association, was a member and past President of the West Virgina Chapter of the American Public Works Association, and was a member of the Lewisburg Volunteer Fire Department. Herbert also served as Chairman of the Board for Gateway Industries (a Sheltered Workshop) and was a member of the Office of Emergency Services for Greenbrier County.

    Mr. Montgomery received The Distinguished Service Award and the President Plaque Award from the West Virginia Chapter of American Public Works Association for his service and leadership. He was honored with the Community Service Award from the Mayor of the City of Lewisburg and was also the recipient of the SAR Bronze Citizenship Medal, as a person of noteworthy accomplishments to his Church, Community, or State.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Margaret Gilmer Montgomery; grandchildren, Herbert S. Montgomery III and Michaela Laurel Montgomery; and siblings, Edith Montgomery Arbaugh (James) and John Rothwell Montgomery (Joyce).

    Survivors include his wife, Katy Harper Montgomery; children, Mary Montgomery Lee (Steven), Rebecca Montgomery Heilman (Jeff), Herbert Stanley Montgomery II (Crystal), James Gray Montgomery (Laura); and John Harper Montgomery (LeAnn); grandchildren, Ian (Julia), Duncan, and Jasper Lee, Brandon and Elizabeth Powell (Adam Kirby), Bella Knight, Ali, Emarya, and Christian Montgomery, Mallory Frye, John Solomon, Harper Lane, and Aaron Thompson Montgomery; great-grandchildren, Kimber, Kendall, and John David II Lilly, and Kennedy Kirby; siblings, Dr. Mary Montgomery Lindquist (Paul), Joan F. Montgomery, Anne Gilmer Merson, and Ellen Gilmer; brothers-in-law, J. Ken Harper (Janice) and James Harper (Karen); and several nieces and nephews.

    A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at the Old Stone Presbyterian Church with Rev. Julie Olt officiating.

    In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Peyton Hospice House – 1265 Maplewood Avenue, Lewisburg, WV, 24901; Old Stone Presbyterian Church – 644 Church Street, Lewisburg, WV 24901; or to the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center – 1240 Lee Street, Charlottesville, VA 22903.
