Baraboo PD: Shelter in place immediately due to “active situation”, open manhunt for suspect
BARABOO, Wis. (WMTV) - Baraboo Police say to shelter in place in the area of Water Street and Manchester Road due to an “active situation”. In an alert, police say it is an ongoing police incident, to avoid the area, and stay in your home. Police believe the suspect, identified as Jeffrey Edward Miller, 32, is armed. If you have any information you are asked to contact the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office at 608-355-4495. Miller is described as having a light complexion, short or shaved brown hair and medium length beard. Police say he was last seen wearing a black shirt.
Philosopher to Southeast arts-sciences deanship
WINONA, Minn. – An ethicist, Adam Potthast, has been named dean of liberal arts and sciences at Minnesota State College Southeast. Potthast holds a doctorate from University of Connecticut at Storrs and has taught philosophy at Park University in Missouri. Most recently he has been at Saint Mary’s University in Winona and Western Technical College in LaCrosse. He co-authored “Ethics for Dummies” in publisher John Wiley’s best-selling series For Dummies. He started at Southeast early in June, but his appointment was announced belatedly. His Southeast dutied include overseeing career pathways for students. He sees his ethics background as a good fit. “It prepared me to solve problems that require creative thinking, like designing and managing in-person courses that are as flexible as online courses and online courses that feel as personal as face-to-face courses.”
2024 Maria W. Faust Sonnet Contest Celebration

Faust Sonnet Contest is the announcement of the winners, a fun celebration hosted in person and online. The public is invited to attend on Saturday, July 27th at 11:00 am at the Winona County History Center. (It can also be viewed online on the Maria W. Faust Sonnet Contest’s Facebook page.) The program will be led by emcee Rob Thomas, with winning sonnets being read either over Zoom by the winning poets or in person by the Great River Shakespeare Festival’s Doug Scholz-Carlson and the contest’s judges. Refreshments from the Blue Heron Coffeehouse will be provided at this free event. The winning sonnets will then be published on the website: sonnetcontest.org.
