As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to integrate into our daily lives, from the economy to healthcare and education, the role of government in guiding its development has never been more crucial.

AI has the potential to drive significant economic growth in Kentucky by creating new jobs, enhancing productivity in industries like agriculture and manufacturing, and fostering innovation in technology startups.

However, with these advancements come challenges. By engaging now with AI, Kentuckians can ensure that the technology is used responsibly and that they are prepared to take advantage of its benefits.

Governments at all levels, including state governments, must take an active role to secure America’s leadership in AI. We must focus on fostering innovation, embracing principled leadership, forging strategic partnerships, and engaging globally.

This summer I have co-chaired two meetings of the Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence Task Force for the Kentucky General Assembly. It is crucial that we approach this conversation with determination and foresight, working to ensure a future that is prosperous, secure, and reflective of our democratic ideals.

America’s success in technology stems from a commitment to innovation. However, the influx of AI regulations risks stifling this progress. Instead of premature restrictions, we should encourage policies that promote experimentation and innovation.

Streamlining research and development, incentivizing AI adoption, and supporting diverse AI models, including open-source initiatives, will ensure that American companies remain competitive. By lowering barriers for innovators and small businesses, we can drive growth and maintain our global edge.

AI reflects the values of its creators. As we pursue AI leadership, we must uphold democratic values, human rights, and security. Unlike authoritarian regimes that use AI for control, America’s approach should be grounded in transparency, accountability, and respect for individual freedoms. By promoting AI development rooted in our values, we can set a global standard that ensures technology serves the greater good.

The rapid development of AI requires collaboration between the public and private sectors. The U.S. private sector has driven much of AI’s progress, and partnerships with government can further enhance this momentum. Initiatives like the U.S. AI Safety Institute (USAISI) show how public-private collaborations can address challenges and opportunities in AI. These partnerships are essential for aligning AI technologies with national interests and maintaining America’s global leadership.

Technology’s impact transcends borders, making international cooperation crucial. The U.S. must lead in establishing global AI norms and standards, working with allies to promote responsible AI development. This engagement must be balanced – we need to protect sensitive technologies while allowing our companies to compete globally. Smart policies that encourage diversity in AI models will foster innovation and ensure that AI advancements align with national security.

The United States and Kentucky has a unique opportunity to shape the future of AI. By focusing on innovation, principled leadership, strategic partnerships, and balanced global engagement, we can secure America’s place as a leader in AI. The decisions we make today will define our technological future and the values that will guide us in the decades to come.

Sen. Amanda Mays Bledsoe, R-Lexington, represents the 12th Senate District, including Boyle, Mercer and Woodford Counties and part of Fayette County. She is co-chair of the Artificial Intelligence Task Force.
