After its 38-21 road victory against Ohio No. 1 St. Edward on Saturday, the Rebels enter the conversation as one of the best teams in the nation.
Surefire Kentucky Mr. Football contender Montavin “Tavi” Quisenberry scored four touchdowns, including a trick-play 69-yard option pass to Geo Brown in which he shrugged off a tackle before letting fly as the Rebels stunned St. Edward at home in Lakewood, Ohio.
Quisenberry, a 5-9, 160-pound senior committed to West Virginia , scored three of his TDs rushing to go with 141 yards on 25 carries and helped secure the win with a huge interception return to the red zone midway through the fourth quarter.
Last week, St. Edward, the three-time defending Ohio Division I champion ranked as the No. 1 team in the entire state , beat Philadelphia’s St. Joseph’s Prep. The result of that game only dropped St. Joseph’s to No. 12 on the SBLive/SI Top 25.
The Rebels were supposed to play rival Danville this week in its annual Title Town tilt, but the Admirals begged off that historic series earlier this year and left a hole in the Rebels’ schedule.
“A lot of people, when we scheduled this game, said, ‘What the hell are you doing, Coach,’” Haddix told Cleveland.com . “I’ve got a lot of faith in our team. They work hard, and it was good to see them come out here and play a big game.”
Look for Boyle County to significantly improve on their No. 52 MaxPreps ranking next week and perhaps crack the SBLive/SI Top 25 list.
Boyle County and St. Edward were tied 21-21 at half, but the Rebels never trailed. Boyle County then scored 17 unanswered points to pull off the shocker.
In addition to Quisenberry’s fourth-quarter pick, junior Jakeem Ray also turned back a St. Edward drive earlier in the fourth with an interception.
Boyle quarterback Baylor Murphy completed 10 of 16 passes for 110 yards and had an 11-yard TD pass to Seneca Driver. Demauriah Brown had 13 carries for 55 yards.
