Vehicle theft remains a significant problem in some Kentucky communities as well as a national issue. Triple A is offering reminders about preventive measures.

Louisville and Lexington are two of the hot spots for car thefts. Reasons for car theft range from social media challenges to seeking vehicle parts like doors, engines, transmissions, and stereos. Triple A’s Lori Weaver Hawkins said vehicle theft victimization runs deep.

“These vehicle thefts actually affect all of us. And that’s because when we have vehicle thefts, that causes insurance costs to go up,” said Weaver Hawkins.

So, Weaver Hawkins suggests checking to make sure drivers have comprehensive coverage. The list of suggestions to reduce vehicle thefts includes not leaving a running car, park in a well-lit area, never leave valuables in sight, and park with wheels turn sharply to the left or right with the emergency brake on.

Lori Weaver Hawkins said hanging key fobs in a convenient spot near the door can create security concerns.

“The problem with that is you know we’ve got key fobs now and the radial frequency that those emit can actually be detected by car thieves and captured by a bit of a distance,” said Weaver Hawkins.

Weaver Hawkins noted some thieves are becoming more sophisticated in bypassing security systems. She added warning devices, immobilizing devices, and tracking and recovery systems can all help. The city of Lexington has filed a lawsuit against KIA and Hyundai over their lack of anti-theft technology in their vehicles. Weaver Hawkins said any car can be at risk of theft.
