Did not expect this crossover on my 2024 bingo card. Last night, the pop princess Olivia Rodrigo hit the stage at Kentucky's Rupp Arena, bringing out one of the best of Bluegrass State... Tyler Childers . To say this pairing is out of left field is beyond true, but if you want a Lexington, Kentucky crowd singing at the top of their lungs, call up Timmy Tyler. We have seen
Rodrigo supporting fellow sad country music and break-up anthem artists like Megan Moroney, and that pairing would make more sense in my eyes. Sonically, on paper, Rodrigo and Childers could not be more different. I digress...let's get back to the content at hand. Rodrigo praised Childers before the two performed his hit love song, "All Your'n." "An incredible artist, and also, he's from here. He's from Kentucky. I am just such a huge fan of his, and the song we are about to sing is, I think, my favorite love song of all time. Will you please give a huge round of applause for Tyler Childers?" With that, her band kicks off into the song, and as soon as Childers opens his mouth, the arena booms with the audience singing along. Rodrigo sways side to side during the first verse before jumping into the second. Childers and Rodrigo switch off singing every other line in the chorus, laying down some stellar harmonies. To be honest, I was not sure how their vocals would pair up together, but I was pleasantly surprised with the match. After the first verse, the audience must have been shaking the ground with how loud they were cheering. I have never heard anything like it (unless it's a Taylor Swift concert). At the song's end, she runs across the stage to hug him, and Childers stoically waves to the audience before exiting the stage. The performance was short, sweet, and stellar. It had no frills or anything to match the rest of the pop star's set, and she dialed everything back to match his vibe. Not a duo I ever thought I'd be reporting on, but a performance that exceeded what I had preconceived going into watching. Check it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81QdbRU4FQU
