(WGHP) — There have been nine major cases of animal abuse reported in the Piedmont Triad this year.

Most of them happened out of Davidson County with the most recent happening this week.

On Monday, deputies came to the 200 block of First Circle in Lexington after getting a report about two dead dogs on the front porch of a home.

Investigators say that Christopher Mullins, 38, of Lexington, killed the two dogs that lived at the home. There were 12 more dogs living at the home that were seized “due to exigent circumstances.”

Davidson County Sheriff Richie Simmons says that Mullins “mutilated and beheaded the 2 adult dogs.”

Mullins was arrested on two counts of felony animal cruelty, 14 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty and one local ordinance charge.

What we don’t often talk about are the impacts these cases have on the people who rescue animals involved in abuse cases.

FurEver Friends of North Carolina and the Davidson County Animal Alliance are volunteer-based nonprofits.

Volunteers say that the hours they work can often be more than their jobs.
