LEXINGTON, N.C. (WGHP) — A Lexington woman was taken to the hospital after a fire that resulted in multiple explosions at her home.

The fire happened around 9 a.m. Friday on Old Mountain Road near High Rock Lake.

Emergency crews from multiple Davidson County agencies responded to the scene. Firefighters on site reported that a neighbor spotted flames first and alerted authorities.

The victim lived at the home and was airlifted to the hospital for treatment of severe lacerations and burns.

“I’ll remember this probably the rest of my life,” said Charles Leonard, a neighbor who saw the fire.

“My wife looked outside the window and saw smoke, so I came outside and saw that my next-door neighbor’s house was on fire,” Leonard said.

He rushed to help his neighbor help his mother from the burning home.

“Fire is a dangerous thing. Your adrenaline is building up, and you just don’t think about anything except helping people,” Leonard said.

Moments after Leonard helped get his neighbor’s mother to safety, an oxygen tank inside the home exploded, causing extensive damage.

“It could’ve been much worse. Somebody could have died. If it hadn’t been for my wife, I wouldn’t have been as quick as I was,” Leonard said.

Fire officials are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire. The Red Cross responded to the scene, offering support to the victim’s family.
