The Man Behind a Successful Lunch Deficit Challenge in Newton Wants to Do More
The man who helped erase $21,000 in owed school lunch accounts in the Newton school district is working on a long term nationwide solution to the school lunch deficit problem. Rick Vernon says his long term vision is to organize a large non-profit that would use money from the public and corporations to delete all food debt, and direct money to class academics directly. The longtime Newton Cardinal was recognized during this week’s school board meeting. Vernon told the community he would match any donation towards the Newton’s deficit lunch accounts from August 9th through the 23rd. Newton Superintendent Tom Messenger told the school board enough money was raised in just a few days to cover the entire deficit.

The Knoxville Cross Country Squads will hope to get the season underway today at the Albia Invitational. The Panthers Monday meet at Pine Knolls was canceled due to the heat. Today, temperatures should be better for running and the Panthers will see various teams from around the area. The Knoxville Cancer Relay is selling honor mile signs for the 2024 relay online and at Friday night’s home football game. These signs are placed in town for the honor mile that display the name of someone that has been affected by cancer and a fundraiser for the relay team with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Jayme Braida with the Knoxville Cancer Relay says these signs are great to honor those who have fought the disease, lost their battle, or those who are still fighting.
Supplemental food program renewed for Jasper County
Aug. 29—Jasper County is continuing its partnership with Polk County for the supplemental food program services provided to senior citizens. Polk County Sheriff’s Office Investigates Double Fatality Motor Vehicle Accident
(Des Moines) Two people died in a two-vehicle crash in Des Moines. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says the accident happened on August 23 at NW 44th Street and NW 126th Avenue. Authorities say 25-year-old Trey Joseph Ridgeway of Ankeny and 23-year-old Jayden Anna Hughes of Clear Lake died in the crash.
