Latrobe man alleges packing firm wrongly fired him after he reported safety issues
A Latrobe man claimed in a federal lawsuit filed this week he was improperly fired from a packaging manufacturer as retaliation after reporting suspected safety issues. Patrick Mitchell, in a six-count complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh, said he became ill while working at Opco Inc., a Latrobe-based producer of foam and insulation products, and was fired after 14 months on the job because of his disability that resulted from a suspected cancer diagnosis.
Historical society mines Derry area's coal mining past for living history program
Miners, their wives, child laborers and patch town store operators all had a part in the history of coal in the Derry area. “There were so many mines in this area,” said Donna Showalter, a Derry Area Historical Society board member. “Just about everybody who has lived in this area has coal mining in their family.”

Leechburg Area officials plan lawsuit against Westmoreland County over tax assessments
Leechburg Area School Board members say they intend to file a lawsuit against Westmoreland County and possibly one against the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The lawsuits would be aimed at bringing about a solution to demands from West Leechburg residents to fix what they say is an inequity in the district’s real estate taxes.
Pa. FDs merge to increase staffing and fundraising opportunities
SOMERSET, Pa. – Two fire departments are set to merge in central Somerset County, but both of their stations will remain in operation, department leaders said. Saddled by personnel shortages and other challenges facing first responders across the nation, crews from Somerset Volunteer Fire Department and Friedens Volunteer Fire Company voted to combine their operations, effective in January.
