ATLANTA - The Atlanta Police Department's Homicide Unit is appealing to the public for assistance in a homicide case that occurred on July 10 at 1634 Hollywood Road NW. Officers responded to a report of a person shot shortly after 4 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered 16-year-old Maurice Weems suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Weems was immediately transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition but, despite intensive life-saving efforts, he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

Atlanta Housing Nears $2M Fundraising Milestone for Sustainability Initiatives
Atlanta Housing (AH), in partnership with SouthFace Energy Institute (SouthFace), one of the country’s leading nonprofits in sustainability, nears a key target of its 5-Year Strategic Plan with the recent receipt of a $2 million federal grant to SouthFace, of which of $1.9 million will be utilized to improve energy efficiency in Atlanta Housing units. These ‘green’ upgrades will weatherize and electrify 200 low-income multifamily homes of AH’s eventual goal of 8,250 green units. The funds will also train building managers on sustainable building management software with training, tools, and resources for the properties. Atlanta Housing’s 5-Year Strategic Plan, which launched in FY 2023, targeted a fundraising goal of $2 million towards sustainability initiatives that would improve energy efficiency in AH units.
Emory & Henry becomes full NCAA Division II member
Emory & Henry College has become a full NCAA Division II member for the upcoming academic year. A news release from the college says the NCAA membership committee deliberated after Emory & Henry completed the necessary annual reporting. Emory & Henry leadership were informed last Thursday that the NCAA had granted the full membership to the school. Now that the college is Division II, the Wasps can qualify for the NCAA Tournament if they win the South Atlantic Conference or perform well enough in the season. Emory & Henry joined the South Atlantic Conference in the 2022-23 school year with provisional status in hopes of becoming a full Division II member by 2024. In April, Emory & Henry announced the multi-million dollar Food City Sports Complex was expected to open by August this year.
