LIMA — New charges have been filed against a Lima man charged in connection with a Jan. 12 shooting that left another male with gunshot wounds to his face and thigh.

Dewayne Carter Jr. was indicted by a grand jury in June charges of felonious assault, a second-degree felony; illegal possession of a firearm in a liquor permit premises, a third-degree felony; having weapons while under disability, a third-degree felony; and carrying a concealed weapon, a fourth-degree felony, in connection with the incident.

Carter, 42, appeared Tuesday in Allen County Common Pleas Court for a pre-trial hearing in that case and at that time was arraigned on new charges handed down earlier this month by a grand jury.

Pleas of not guilty were entered on Carter’s behalf to single counts of felonious assault, a second-degree felony that includes a three-year firearm specification, and a third-degree felony count of having weapons under disability.

The events that resulted in those charges are alleged to have occurred April 30.

During Tuesday’s hearing, Carter waived his constitutional right to a speedy trial in both cases, causing Judge Jeffrey Reed to vacate a July 30 trial date in the earlier case. A new tentative trial date of Dec. 10 was set in both cases.

In the earlier case, court documents state that at around 2:05 p.m. on Jan. 12, Lima police went to the Bite & Buzz parking lot at 701 S. Main St. on a report of a shooting. Police found a male in the parking lot with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds on the right side of his face and his inner right thigh and a broken jaw. Carter had fled the scene and was not located. The victim said he knew Carter, adding that the altercation centered around Carter’s wife.

The victim only knew Carter as “Debo” but knew his wife’s name and approximately where she lived, which led police to identify Carter, who lives at the same address.
