New Sight School to celebrate 103rd anniversary of founding

The first consolidated school in Lincoln County will celebrate its 103rd anniversary with a gathering on Saturday, July 6.

New Sight School was formed in 1921 when the Confederate Grove, Garner, Clear Branch and Mt. Zion community schools consolidated, and built one campus just off New Sight Drive in north Lincoln County.

The school was organized under the Smith-Hughes Acts of 1917, designed to promote voca-tional, agricultural, and domestic science education in public schools. New Sight opened with O.F. Grantham as its first principal, eight teachers, and 248 students, and remained open until 1960.

The last class to graduate did so in 1949. Afterward, the school only covered grades 1-8 instead of all the way through 12th.

On July 6, alumni of the school will gather at New Sight Baptist Church’s Family Life Center, located very close to where the school once stood, at 629 Forest Trail NE. A meet-and-greet will begin at 9 a.m., followed by registration at 10 a.m. A program will be presented at 11 a.m. and a covered dish lunch will follow at noon.

“All classes through the years of the school will be recognized,” said alum Harrell Montgomery. “Bring your family and let’s have an enjoyable reunion.”

Attendees are asked to bring photos, yearbooks, report cards, school papers, diplomas, class rings, or any other memorabilia they may have. DVDs of previous class reunions will be availa-ble for purchase.
