Forecasts show good chance of rain well into next week

BROOKHAVEN — Last year, Lincoln County was starting to develop into a severe drought by the end of July 2023. It kicked off seven straight months of exceptional drought beginning in September and ending in March according to Drought.gov. A year later, a week of rain persists with more to come.

National Weather Service in Jackson forecasts rain to continue today with an 80 percent chance of showers. Friday has a 70 percent chance of rain with showers and potential thunderstorms as does Saturday. NWS warns of a flash flooding threat in the event of heavy localized rainfall of 2 to 4 inches into Friday. Low lying areas, creeks and urban areas could be threatened during a heavy rainfall event.

Sunday’s rain chances are 70 percent with a high of 91 degrees which could snap a streak of days with high temperatures lower than 90 degrees. NWS records show the past six days have been below the high of 90 degrees and temperatures were below the normal temperatures for July.

Monday’s rain chances will drop to 60 percent followed by another drop to 40 percent Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to NWS Jackson records, Lincoln County recorded seven straight days of measurable rainfall as of Thursday morning. The longest streak of measurable rainfall came in June, 1983 with 13 straight days of rainfall ending on June 27. If the forecasts hold true, the July 2024 streak of rainy days could end up in the top 10. The streak has to reach 9 to tie a records set in 2004 and 1957.
