Three & Out: Jamar Mozee gets to work for Nebraska, end-of-the-summer BBQ visitor list is coming together, and big increase in high school football transfers

In this week’s Three & Out , Jamar Mozee getting to work quick for Nebraska, July 27 weekend could be a significant weekend for the Huskers, and high school football transfers are on the rise. Here is your Three & Out:

It didn’t take long for Jamar Mozee to get involved

There was some big news for Nebraska recruiting on Sunday with the announcement that former Lee’s Summit (Mo.) North head coach Jamar Mozee was joining Matt Rhule’s staff. The former high school head coach left Lee’s Summit North to join the UCF staff on February 28 ^th as an analyst.

The announcement that Mozee was joining Nebraska’s staff occurred on Sunday afternoon, and on Monday, Mozee was already making new offers. The first recruit to announce his new offer from Nebraska was 2027 defensive back Semaj Sanford .

“I have known Coach Mozee since he was a coach at UCF,” Sanford said. “He offered me there as well.”

Sanford will only be a sophomore this fall, and recruiting is still very new to him. Still, he says that Coach Mozee was very easy to communicate with when he was at UCF.

“Something I like about Coach Mozee is that I can talk to him on a personal level. From day one, it felt like we had good chemistry.”

Mozee wasn’t done with the offer to Sanford. On Monday, he was also linked to another new offer to 2026 wide receiver Vance Spafford .

It will be fascinating to see how the role of a staff member like Mozee evolves. With no in-home visits in December, you could see Nebraska putting more people on the road to watch high school games. Also, putting a coach in an area like Kansas City and another person like Keith Williams, who has such strong ties to St. Louis, could give Nebraska some juice in Missouri.

Notice I haven’t mentioned Mozee’s four-star wide receiver son, Isaiah Mozee , a senior at Lee’s Summit (Mo.) North and committed to Oregon. It was interesting to see Mozee in Lincoln in the middle of June for an official visit after committing to Oregon just weeks before. There might be a better explanation for the visit now.

However, Isaiah is a short-term goal, while a coach like Jamar Mozee getting involved in recruiting can energize the recruiting game. In several of my conversations with Coach Mozee before he left for UCF, he greatly admired Nebraska, the people around the program, and the tradition. It’s a tremendous fit.

End of end-of-summer event is taking shape

The dead period ends next week, and Nebraska plans to host several recruits on July 27. This rule change happened for the first time last year. The Huskers hosted an end-of-summer BBQ, and they hosted 16 commits (12 scholarship recruits and four walk-ons).

This year’s end-of-the-summer recruiting event will be a little different.

You can expect some of the 2025 commitments to be in attendance that weekend, but this is a critical weekend for 2026 and 2027 recruiting class recruits to attend Nebraska.

In addition to the 2026 and 2027 recruits in Lincoln next weekend, the Huskers may get a chance to host 5-star+ offensive tackle David Sanders . Steve Wiltfong reported on Tuesday that Sanders and his family plan to see more schools in July.

This could be a massive development for Nebraska. The Huskers made Sanders’s final four list, but unlike the other three schools on his list, Nebraska has only had a chance to host Sanders once.

The one weekend Nebraska could get Sanders on campus was Mother’s Day weekend. Nebraska freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola had been communicating with Sanders about visiting Lincoln and got the No. 1 offensive tackle to trip to Lincoln and take a look.

The problem was that Raiola wasn’t in Lincoln that weekend. He was attending his sister’s graduation in Texas that weekend instead. It was a missed opportunity in May, and the Huskers may get another chance to get Raiola and Sanders.

“We’re in the process of getting all the dates in order and we’ll talk to David and see where he wants to go for the last final impression,” Sanders’ mother Samantha said.

“If he has the opportunity to get to more than one, we want to.”

It’s difficult to suggest Sanders might choose the one school on his list he’s visited only once. This could be a significant development for Nebraska and something to watch as the July 27 weekend gets closer.

Transfers invade high school football

High school football transfers are becoming more common, mirroring the trend in college football. The transfer portal has transformed the game, leading schools to focus on retaining current players and recruiting high school players while also scouting the portal for immediate help.

Three years ago, I covered one of my first high school transfers when linebacker Christian Jones left Omaha (Neb.) Burke to join Westside in 2025. Similarly, two years ago, quarterback Will Anderson departed from Omaha (Neb.) Millard West to move to Omaha (Neb.) Bellevue West, becoming the successor to Daniel Kaelin .

The increase in transfers this year is alarming.

I spoke to a source close to Nebraska high school football who sees this not as a trend but as the new norm. Additionally, the same source says that the days when a group of homegrown kids could work hard and win a championship are ending.
