Man convicted of killing Temple University student Samuel Collington sentenced to decades in prison
The man convicted of killing a Temple University student during a robbery back in 2021 will spend decades behind bars.Latif Williams, 19, was convicted of third-degree murder back in February in the death of 21-year-old Samuel Collington of Prospect Park, Pa.He was sentenced on Tuesday to 25 - 50 years in prison.Police say Collington was shot and killed while returning to the North Philadelphia campus after spending Thanksgiving break with his family.He was set to graduate the following spring.Authorities said he was unloading his SUV near the 2200 block of N. Park Avenue when Williams snuck up on him and a struggle ensued.Collington was shot in the chest and back. He was taken to Temple University Hospital where he died of his injuries.
Driver who fled N.J. traffic stop killed in crash moments later, police say
A driver who fled a police traffic stop in Atlantic County early Monday was killed a short time later when his car struck a tree and he was ejected, authorities said. Local police pulled over the car shortly after 3 a.m. on Route 655 South in Franklin Township but during the stop, the driver drove off, according to New Jersey State Police.

CAMDEN – Citing preliminary drug overdose data, Camden County officials on Monday said the county's 39% decline in suspected drug deaths in the first half of 2024 indicates the county is winning the battle against the scourge. A jury convicted a former Philadelphia homicide detective for assaulting a suspect to obtain a confession and then lying about it in court.James Pitts was found guilty of obstruction and perjury on Tuesday.Pitts was accused of assaulting Obina Onyiah in 2010, which resulted in Onyiah confessing to a robbery and murder of William Glatz at a jewelry store, which he did not commit.Onyiah's conviction was vacated in 2021 after evidence showed he could not have committed the crime.Pitts is scheduled to be sentenced on October 4.According to the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office, this is the first time in the city's history that a Philadelphia detective has been found guilty of coercing a confession that led to the wrongful conviction of an innocent person."My administration will continue to seek evenhanded justice in all cases prosecuted by this office, regardless of the defendant, because no one is above the law," said DA Larry Krasner.

Amazon worker fires gunshots in South Philly during altercation with school bus aide
Philadelphia police are investigating after an Amazon delivery worker fired gunshots during an altercation with a school bus aide.It happened shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday on the corner of 17th and Christian streets in South Philadelphia.This all started when police say a school bus driver was unable to make a turn due to a parked Amazon van.Chopper 6 over shots fired incident in South Philadelphia on July 17, 2024.Officials tell Action News the aide on the bus got out and asked the worker to move. That's when an altercation ensued and at some point, shots were fired by the Amazon worker.No injuries were reported.Police say the school bus was full of children transporting campers. The students were able to take shelter inside the nearby Edwin M. Stanton School.The Amazon worker is now in custody and will be facing charges.Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call police at 215-686-TIPS.
