New Veterans Center coming to Youngstown
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A new Veterans Center will be moving into the Valley with the help of some state funding. The Board of Mahoning County Commissioners and the Veteran’s Service Commission announced July 2 that the state of Ohio dedicated $650,000 in capital funding for a new state-of-the-art Veterans Center.
Columbiana County gears up for second annual Pride Celebration
Columbiana County is preparing for its second annual Pride Celebration to be hosted at Eleanor Acres in Lisbon in late July. The event will be free and will contain family-friendly entertainment, food, crafts, workshops and more. It will be highlighted with a charity drag show where all proceeds will go to the Columbiana County Humane Society.
Three Valley Democrats making bids to take on Cutrona for state Senate seat
The deadline for Democrats interested in running against Al Cutrona to fill a seat in the Ohio Senate previously held by Mike Rulli is fast approaching. Mahoning County Democratic Party Chair Chris Anderson tells 21 News those interested in running have until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, July 1 to submit interest. Candidates can submit their interest to chair@mahoningcountydemocraticparty.com.
Mahoning, Trumbull courts to receive new fingerprint scanners from state grant program
Courts within Mahoning and Trumbull County will receive new fingerprint scanners from a state grant program to "bolster criminal-records systems" within the Valley. Announced in a press release from the Attorney General's Office, the state's criminal-records repository will pay for 77 new devices that courts across Ohio will use to capture defendants' fingerprints for submission to the database.
Norfolk Southern Sued by Insurers Over Ohio Train Derailment
Norfolk Southern is facing a subrogation lawsuit from several insurance companies over the February 2023 train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, which resulted in a toxic chemical spill. The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, includes claims of negligence, strict liability, and trespass.

GREENE TWP. ― Hang out with heathens at the Hookstown Fairgrounds. That's the unique opportunity presented July 26-28 at the first Beaver County Heathen Festival. First let's explain: Heathens − in this context − is another name for Vikings. Or as the National Museum of Denmark explains, "In the early Viking period the Nordic gods were worshipped in Scandinavia. Christianity was being adopted in Europe and therefore the Vikings in the north stood out as different. The Christians of Europe called the Vikings heathens. This term was used indiscriminately for those with differing beliefs."
Kelly Linger of East Liverpool appointed as judge to Columbiana County Municipal Court
Kelly Linger was recently appointed as a judge to Columbiana County Municipal Court by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. Linger, of East Liverpool, will assume office on July 23, 2024, and will be taking the seat formerly held by Judge Katelyn Dickey, who resigned upon being appointed to the Ohio Seventh District Court of Appeals. She will serve the remainder of the unfinished term and will need to run for election in November 2025 to retain the seat.

MINERVA CONCERT – New Song, Geneva College’s music and drama ministry group, will offer a free performance at 7 p.m. July 5 on Minerva’s Municipal Park Stage. Nine students are chosen in January for the group that begins their service in the summer following. Students are chosen because of their musical and dramatic abilities and because of the way they can articulate and convey their faith. New Song is directed by Lindsay Shaffer, Minerva High School and Geneva College alumna. Municipal Park’s parking is adjacent to the Minerva High School parking lot.
