Drought monitor: Conditions slowly worsening across Ohio due to lack of rain
CINCINNATI — Drought conditions have slowly been worsening around parts of the WLWT viewing area this summer, and the weather, as of late, has everything to do with it. A lack of rain through the summer months and even into the month of August has exacerbated drought conditions to the point where they are considered severe to extreme for areas of Highland and Adams County, Ohio. The I-275 loop and Greater Cincinnati stand in abnormally dry conditions. The drought doesn't stop in the eastern counties of our viewing area. Areas of both moderate to extreme drought continue into much of eastern and southeast Ohio, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Nicolette Frketic has made the jump from JV coach to Varsity this season for her first season with the head coach title. Unlike most new head coaches, Frketic knows exactly what her roster is capable of. That’s the benefit of staying with the program she’s been a part of for the last few seasons. The Leopards feature plenty of hungry veterans that are looking to put the program on the map. All of the Leopards players have seen the varsity floor before this season, so nothing is going to surprise this group.
Ward-Beecher planetarium to reopen in October at Youngstown State University
A 2023 fire closed the Ward-Beecher planetarium at Youngstown State University, but after extensive renovation, a grand reopening has been set for the weekend of Oct. 4-5. The renovation included the construction and installation of a new copper roof, dome, carpeting, cove lights and many other improvements as a result of the fire, according to a posting on the YSU website.
YSU Announces Official Watch Party Location For Season Opener vs. Villanova
Youngstown State football fans are invited to watch the Penguins season opener at Villanova at Double Bogey's in The Bunker Southern Park this Thursday evening. Kickoff for the contest from Villanova Stadium in Philadelphia, Pa., is set for 6 p.m. The game will be streamed live via subscription-based Flo Football (Sports) and will also be carried live on 570 WKBN AM and the iHeartRadio app.
Blood donations urged as severe weather strains already low supply
Blood centers across the country and here in Ohio continue to highlight an emergency need for blood donations. Solvita, the Dayton-area blood donation center, said Monday that it is preparing to enter the challenging Labor Day holiday period with critically short supply of multiple blood types. Blood collection this summer has often fallen below the 350 donors per day needed to supply area hospitals while coinciding with sudden spikes in hospital emergency blood usage, according to Solvita.
