LITTLE ROCK, Ark – An Alabama woman has been reunited with her dog that was taken from her on the Fourth of July weekend.

On Sunday evening, April Dooley’s car and dog were stolen when she made a stop in the SoMa district while traveling to Kansas City.

Dooley said she spent the last two days working with police and people in the community, to find her dog and car.

“I have lived a nightmare for 48 hours and so many different emotions, but we had a really good happy ending,” Dooley said.

She said her focus was on putting out flyers and getting as many people as she could to help in what became a manhunt.

“These four homeless men, they seem to think at that point that Opal had been sold, and I burst into tears, they grabbed me and were like, ‘No we’re going to find her,’” Dooley said.

She said as they continued to search, people who lived nearby said they saw the suspect go inside near SoMa, so she quickly contacted detectives.

On arrival, detectives said they weren’t able to find her, but Dooley said, “The four homeless men went inside after the detectives came out and they found her.”

She said the detectives then returned, taking the suspect into custody, and got her to tell where she last left Dooley’s car and dog.

“She told me 21st and Broadway, it was tucked behind a fence,” Dooley said.

She says her car was found with some items missing but was still in good condition. She then teamed up with leaders from Arkansas Lost and Found to search for her dog.

She said multiple SoMa district business owners joined in to help, and soon received the call she had been waiting for.

“It was a lady in Arkansas, she asked about the reward money I told her that it was there, and she face-timed me, I blinked for a minute, but it was Opal,” Dooley said.

Her dog was returned safe and unharmed, she said she is thankful for the Little Rock community.

She says she’ll be hitting the road again in a week and this time she’s ensuring that her car doors are locked.
