'Depressed' black bear sitting next to Florida road probably overheated, officials say
"Onlookers were trying to take selfies with the bear and he’s clearly not in the mood for pictures. The bear has shown signs of severe stress," the sheriff's office said. City sets tentative millage rate
During the regular meeting of the Madison City Commission on Tuesday, July 9, the commissioners agreed on a tentative millage rate for the city. The proposed millage rate would remain at seven mills. This means property owners would pay seven dollars in property tax per $1,000 of property value. If a piece of property was valued at $100,000, the property owner would pay $700 in property tax. The total tax levied at the proposed millage rate would be $839,855. The first public hearing for the fiscal year 2024/2025 budget is set for Monday, Sept. 9, at 5:30 p.m., in City Hall, located at 321 SW Rutledge St., in Madison.
Help local teachers with supplies
In an effort to help local teachers, Capital City Bank is collecting school supplies ahead of the upcoming school year. Donations are being accepted at the bank until the beginning of the school year. The school year for students in PreK, kindergarten, first grade, seventh grade and ninth grade begins on Monday, Aug. 12. The school year for all other students begins on Wednesday, Aug. 14.
Rising Warriors have successful summer
This summer has been busy, fun and successful for the Rising Warriors Martial Arts team of Madison. Instructor R. J. Krueger states that the young athletes have competed in three tournaments since late June, taking several first- and second-place trophies during the competitions. During the tournaments, the young martial artists competed in sparring, forms (in which the competitors perform a series of prescribed moves) and weapons. The weapons competition is relatively new for some of the local students, however, they performed well.
