Anthony Gordon's blunt one-word message as Liverpool refuses to give up on transfer

Liverpool's summer could be about to kick into high gear in more ways than one. The transfer situation will be watched with particular interest, and Anthony Gordon is still yet to disappear from the gossip columns .

It seemed as though the time to do a deal might have been and gone. Newcastle was scrambling to meet PSR requirements before June 30 , and Liverpool had even signed off on a deal that would have seen Gordon arrive at Anfield and Joe Gomez move the other way, but the Magpies ultimately found alternative routes to compliance.

However, various outlets have suggested that Gordon's head was turned, and that Liverpool remains keen on agreeing a transfer — David Lynch, for instance, told Anfield Agenda that there is a "real chance" the move could be revived later in the window. Now, the winger has made a short comment, having returned to Newcastle training following his Euro 2024 involvement.

Gordon is among the final wave of players to return from international summer commitments, with England having gone all the way to the Euros final. Liverpool is also majorly benefitting from this last influx, with Arne Slot finally working with an essentially full-strength squad.

The US tour was hugely productive, with Slot's style clearly making a difference already, and a number of peripheral players like Fabio Carvalho able to make a strong case. But as the Premier League season draws ever closer, Liverpool can now start preparing with the likes of Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold , Alexis Mac Allister, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz back in the camp.

That alone will be very helpful. But we can also expect Liverpool to finally enter the transfer market, after sporting director Richard Hughes hinted earlier in the summer that business could be delayed by major international tournaments.

Interestingly, he also included the Olympics in that assessment, which has got Liverpool fans theorizing about which of the U23 stars in Paris might be of interest. But with players like Gordon only just back from their holidays, the stage is set for a first foray into the market.

Gordon, for his part, was giving little away with his social media activity following his return to Newcastle training. Accompanied by a single "sparkles" emoji, he posted a blunt caption: "Back."

How much longer he'll be back in Newcastle training remains to be seen. He forced through a move to the North-East from Everton just 18 months ago, but if his boyhood club redoubles its efforts to sign him, perhaps he'll be agitating for another transfer.

Liverpool.com says: Gordon could certainly have been more effusive about his return to Newcastle training, given the swirling rumors. On the whole, though, there's little to be read into his social media post.

Ultimately, it would still be a surprise to see him leave Newcastle this summer, so soon after arriving. The real point of interest, assuming a transfer is not dramatically constructed, is whether Gordon commits to a new deal. With just two years left on his contract, Liverpool would surely knock on the door more forcefully next summer if nothing changes.
