Liverpool set to make millions from clever transfer clause as deal edges closer

Tottenham Hotspur's pursuit of Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke could be about to net Liverpool millions thanks to a transfer sell-on clause .

Ange Postecoglou's side sold England skipper Harry Kane to Bayern Munich last summer, with Heung-Min Son and Richarlison leading the line for Spurs during the 2023/24 season. However, Spurs are keen to add more goals to the attack.

They want to bring in Bournemouth star Solanke, who enjoyed a breakout season in the Premier League last term, scoring 19 goals in 38 games. The Cherries forward has a release fee clause of $82m (£65m/€75m) in his contract.

And given the 26-year-old had scored just 10 Premier League goals in 96 appearances prior to last season, that figure would seem lofty. However, Solanke, who was at Liverpool before moving to Bournemouth, looked to have finally arrived in the top flight last term.

Back in May 2017, Solanke signed for the Reds from Chelsea following the expiration of his contract. But fast forward to January 2019 and the striker was on the move again. Liverpool sold Solanke to the Cherries for $24m (£19m/€22m). And should Bournemouth be ready to cash in on the one-cap England forward, then Liverpool stand to make millions.

The Reds inserted a 20 per cent sell-on clause in the deal that saw Bournemouth sign Solanke. If Spurs buy Solanke, who the Times report they are "increasingly confident" of signing, for $82m, Liverpool will pocket 20 per cent of the future profit - which will see them receive around $11m (£9.2m/€10.6m).

That is simply an astonishing return for a striker who Liverpool signed on a free from a Premier League rival and scored just one goal for them in 27 appearances. It represents excellent business from the Reds and Michael Edwards, who was enjoying his first stint with Liverpool back when Solanke was sold.

While the Bournemouth striker was never going to get regular minutes at Anfield due to the impressive forward's in front of him in the pecking order, Solanke's departure has led to him becoming a much better player.

Liverpool.com says: "With Liverpool yet to make a foray into the transfer market yet, any potential increase in the summer budget will be a welcome one for the Reds.

"Should Solanke move to Spurs, then Liverpool will pocket a sizeable sum which they themselves can re-invest. However, they should be wary that Solanke's signing will undoubtedly make Spurs better, meaning they will need to be smart when it comes to recruitment to improve their own squad in the coming weeks before the window slams shut.
