Liverpool looks as though it could be closing in on the signing of Martin Zubimendi, with reports claiming Real Sociedad expects the player to agree to the transfer .

The Reds are weighing up a deal to sign the Spain international this summer as they target a new No.6. The Times is among a number of sources to have reported on their interest, with Zubimendi having a release clause of $65m (£51m/€60m).

Arne Slot has reportedly identified the defensive midfield role as his priority this summer, having cast his eye over his new squad over the past few weeks. Although he hasn’t seen all of his squad in action yet, he has seen the majority of it during a pre-season tour of the United States.

During games against Real Betis, Arsenal and Manchester United, the new Liverpool head coach tried out Wataru Endo , Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch in the position. It seems though he has set his sights now on an entirely new option.

And Liverpool would appear to be getting closer to signing Zubimendi. The Athletic reports that Real Sociedad expects the midfielder to agree a move to Anfield , having become aware of the Reds’ interest.

Unless Sociedad is willing to negotiate a fee below the reported release clause, it will have to be paid in full. The club though will grant Zubimendi’s wish if he asks to leave.

It would be something of a coup for Liverpool, with Zubimendi having previously snubbed moves to Arsenal and Barcelona, while publicly insisting he was happy at Sociedad.

Liverpool should have no problems paying Zubimendi’s release clause, although they may be able to offset some of the cost , with the likes of Tyler Morton, Sepp van den Berg, Fabio Carvalho and Endo being linked with moves away this summer.

Liverpool.com says: Things look to be moving quickly on this one. If Liverpool can secure Zubimendi’s signature before the start of the new season, that would be perfect, and would set the Reds up nicely for the new campaign. Watch this space…
