'I couldn't believe Anthony Gordon links to Liverpool - he should stay at Newcastle'

Former Premier League star Chris Sutton has urged Anthony Gordon to turn down any potential move to Liverpool this summer.

Having missed out on a move to Anfield earlier in the summer, Gordon has nevertheless continued to be linked with a move to Liverpool . The 23-year-old has been back in training with Newcastle this week ahead of the new Premier League season.

Liverpool had agreed a deal with the Magpies earlier in the summer , with Joe Gomez having been earmarked to move in the opposite direction. Newcastle though pulled the plug after finding other avenues to ease their profit and sustainability worries.

Gordon though is still being linked with a potential move to Anfield this summer. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe admitted this week that the club could still offload some of their bigger names , although he insisted they would ‘fight tooth and nail’ to keep them.

And should Liverpool come calling again for Gordon, the former Everton star has been advised to stay put, with Sutton admitting to being left in disbelief by the links this summer.

“I heard these Anthony Gordon rumors a few months ago and was left scratching my head a little bit,” the BBC Sport pundit told the Mirror . “First and foremost, I don’t know how Newcastle fans would feel about selling the player.

“The way Gordon was at Everton, I wasn’t the only person who questioned whether he had the right temperament. But in fairness to him, he’s gone to Newcastle to work under Eddie Howe , and he’s knuckled down. Last season he was brilliant and performed really well. He produced his best form.

“If I was him, I wouldn’t be in a rush to leave Howe and Newcastle . The fans there really took to him - he felt the love from the Geordies. He seemed to have a really good relationship with the manager too, which is key.

“The Liverpool move is attractive and will come one day. But staying at Newcastle is the sensible option.”

Liverpool.com says: We’re not really convinced that staying at Newcastle this summer and waiting for Liverpool further down the line would have much benefit for Gordon. After all, he would get the chance to play in the Champions League with the Reds in the new season, and potentially develop his game further.

If he decides not to sign a new deal at St James’ Park either, it might be in Newcastle’s best interests to cash in this summer. If Liverpool comes calling, Gordon should take the chance.
