'I know Anthony Gordon well and Liverpool should be at front of queue for transfer'

Liverpool has been told it should be at the front of the queue for Anthony Gordon . It comes after the Reds explored a move earlier in the summer.

Back in June, according to the ECHO , there were even plans for Gordon to undergo a medical in Leipzig while away with the England camp at Euro 2024 . Liverpool had agreed a $96m (£75m/€88m) deal, with Joe Gomez set to go to Newcastle for $57m (£45m/€53m).

Newcastle ultimately found other ways to get within its PSR limits before the accounting date cut-off of June 30 , so the deal was shelved. But Liverpool has been encouraged to do whatever it can to revive the move for the boyhood Reds fan.

Jamie Carragher was speaking on behalf of Sky Sports as part of its start of season football campaign which brings together 92 passionate football fans from each team across the Premier League & EFL to share their hopes for the 2024/25 season. He urged his former club to continue its pursuit of Gordon, sharing his view as someone who, by his own admission, has close links to his fellow Liverpudlian.

“Anthony Gordon would be a good signing for any team, he’s been a great signing for Newcastle," Carragher insisted. "I cannot believe he didn’t get more minutes than he did at EURO 2024, I thought we were crying out for pace in the attack, and he adds that.

"I’ve known Anthony for a long time because he doesn’t live too far from me, I know a few of his relatives, so I’ve always been a huge fan of Anthony Gordon. If Newcastle are having problems with PSR, I would like Liverpool to be at the front of that [queue for Anthony Gordon] because he could be a real top player, he can go to another level."

Newcastle solved its immediate PSR crisis by offloading Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton, seemingly allowing it to cling on to Gordon. But Eddie Howe admitted recently that financial restrictions continue to inform decisions at the club .

Howe also insisted that Gordon is fully focused, and has been training well. The forward underlined that assessment by scoring 15 minutes into his return against Girona .

But it has been widely reported that Gordon would be keen on a move to Liverpool. If and when his future comes up for discussion again, with his contract into its final two years, the Reds could do worse than heeding Carragher's advice.

Liverpool.com says: It would take some late drama for Gordon to complete a switch to Liverpool this summer, although it's not completely impossible. More likely, however, is the revival of the move a little further down the line.

If anything, Liverpool would be grateful for another six months of data on Gordon, who is still very young, and has only truly excelled for one full campaign to date. If he holds off on a new deal, the Reds' hand will strengthen.
