Liverpool receives huge Anthony Gordon transfer boost as Newcastle eye replacement

Liverpool appears to have received a boost in its pursuit of Anthony Gordon with Newcastle United close to adding a new signing in his position.

Multiple sources including talkSPORT are reporting that Newcastle has a legitimate interest in acquiring Noni Madueke from Chelsea this summer, who need to move on from multiple players as they head into the season with an extremely large squad. Newcastle's interest in Madueke has been reported for the past few days, with some suggesting they could make a bid before the first game of the season this weekend.

Newcastle acquiring Madueke would likely make Gordon much more expendable, a player who Liverpool's interest in is hardly a secret. The Reds had an agreement in principle in place for Gordon to come and join Arne Slot's squad for a fee of $96m (£75m/€88m), with Joe Gomez heading the other way for $57m (£45m/€53m) in a seperate deal.

However, the move fell through after Gomez' transfer to Newcastle collapsed while the Magpies opted to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh while keeping Gordon, enough to comply with the June 30 PSR deadline.

Since that deadline, talks have gone very quiet on Gordon potentially moving on. However, the team does appear to be close to spending big money on Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi. A deal to sign Madueke would also cost a significant chunk of their available funds and may leave them still needing to sell players .

In a recent interview, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: "We are still in a position where Financial Fair Play will affect our decision-making. We want to keep our best players, and we will fight tooth and nail to do that. That doesn’t mean there won’t be outgoings of certain players, because there has to be from our side."

Developments could potentially see Liverpool reiginite their interest, with sources suggesting Slot will continue to look to bolster his squad whether or not a deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi is concluded .

The Reds themselves are looking to move on from several players, fielding interest in Sepp van den Berg, Bobby Clark, Kaide Gordon, Ben Doak, Nat Phillips and Tyler Morton. Fabio Carvalho has already moved on, joining Brentford.

Gordon has just two years remaining on his contract with Newcastle, and could force the club's hand with a transfer request, but it remains unclear whether Liverpool will make the funds available to bring in the 23-year-old.
