Liverpool's Giorgi Mamardashvili stance after being tipped to make $45m transfer move

Liverpool has been strongly linked with a move for Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili this month as Arne Slot searches for a suitable backup and long-term successor to current No.1 Alisson .

Irishman Caiomhin Kelleher currently occupies that role but the 25-year-old is desperate for regular first-team football and is being touted for a move elsewhere as a result, with Juventus currently in the running to sign the Republic of Ireland international according to Calciomercato .

With this in mind, another second-choice goalkeeper has reportedly been one of Liverpool's priorities this summer, despite already having the likes of Marcelo Pitaluga, Vitezslav Jaros and Harvey Davies amongst its ranks. However, whether any of the trio are ready for the step-up to be Slot's No.2 is to be determined.

Nonetheless, Liverpool has been frequently linked with a move for Mamardashvili in recent weeks, who has impressed during his three-year spell at Valencia. Since joining from Dinamo Tbilisi in 2021, the 23-year-old has gone on to make a perfect century of appearances for the La Liga side and starred for Georgia during its European Championship debut this summer.

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano on Sunday (Aug 12), Liverpool is "seriously considering" signing Mamardashvili this summer, who is seen as a long-term successor to Alisson. Furthermore, Mamardashvili is believed to be keen on joining the Reds.

Romano added that Valencia is wanting at least $32.8million (£25.6million/€30million) for Mamardashvili but, if the deal goes ahead, he will return to Valencia on loan for at least a season, with Alisson still only 31.

However, those claims have been quashed by The Athletic , who have reported that although the Reds have been monitoring Mamardashvili, they are not looking to recruit a goalkeeper in this window as things stand.

With Kelleher still at the club, despite strong links over a departure this summer, it's understandable that Liverpool is unlikely to make a move for another back-up goalkeeper, especially when there are more pressing matter at hand.

Point in case is the failed transfer of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi , who performed a remarkable U-turn on a move to Anfield over the weekend in order to remain with the La Liga outfit this season.

Sporting director Richard Hughes is claimed to be angry after thinking Zubimendi had given him his word to join the Reds, with reports suggesting Liverpool felt the player was heading for Anfield .

With the need for a midfielder still apparent, it would be no surprise if a move for Mamardashvili, set to be a second-choice goalkeeper, is not at the forefront of proceedings heading into the final two-and-a-half weeks of the transfer window.
