Arne Slot makes next Liverpool transfer decision after Federico Chiesa swoop

Liverpool is reportedly still on the hunt for a new No. 6 after missing out on Martin Zubimendi.

The Reds and their new head coach Arne Slot decided not to make any major moves in the summer transfer window, apart from late deals for Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa. They did, however, attempt to sign a new defensive midfielder.

Zubimendi, who has previously been linked with Arsenal and Manchester United, was seen as the ideal addition to Slot's squad, but he chose to stay at Real Sociedad.

Despite this setback, Liverpool have chosen to stick with their current squad rather than re-enter the market, but they are actively looking for a new No. 6 behind the scenes.

This is according to a new report from The Athletic , which suggests that Liverpool will 'continue to assess possible options' with a view to strengthening that position in the future.

The report, published less than 24 hours after the transfer deadline day , also states that the impressive performances of Ryan Gravenberch are unlikely to affect these plans, despite him currently playing in a deeper role.

Gravenberch, 22, has reportedly impressed Slot in a holding midfield role, and the former Feyenoord boss is familiar with his abilities from his time in the Netherlands with Ajax.

Arne Slot has been vocal about Gravenberch's impressive stint in the midfield during a pre-season clash with Manchester United, yet he also dropped hints that Liverpool are still on the lookout for fresh talent. "I think Ryan did really well in that position today and we have other options as well. The best way to judge it is when we have all the players back and we still haven't

"But a club like Liverpool always keeps its eye open to see what's available, players that can strengthen the squad and that is what we - Richard mostly - but me as well are looking to do but that is not particular to one position. We constantly evaluate the squad where can we do something and what do we have."

With two wins under their belt against Ipswich Town and Brentford, Liverpool are gearing up for a major showdown with Manchester United this Sunday.
