LIVINGSTON, NJ — The Livingston High School (LHS) Rocketry Club, founded by Livingston students Alex Yang and Bryan Qi to foster their passion for aerospace engineering and share their passion with others, recently hosted its inaugural community rocket launch to teach aspiring aerospace engineers the basics of model rocket design, help them construct their own rockets and give them the opportunity to watch their creations soar.
With more than 100 people participating in this event and a slight breeze to support a successful rocket launch, dozens of rockets constructed by young students took flight in the back field of Heritage Middle School (HMS).
“I wasn’t sure how many people were going to attend the event, but I was delighted that so many families came out to have fun and support the club,” said Yang, who coordinated this event as co-president of the LHS Rocketry Club.
Club members patiently helped the young attendees construct rockets while explaining the different parts, their functions, and the science behind flight.
“It was heartwarming to see the amazement on the kids’ faces when their rockets shot into the sky,” said Yang. “We definitely gave them a memorable experience that hopefully sparked their interest in aerospace and STEM in general."
Yang expressed gratitude toward Livingston Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Matthew Block, LHS Assistant Principal Marie Battist-Rock, HMS Principal Shawn Kelly, LHS Rocketry Club Advisors Dr. Dorine Starace and Preethi Ganapathy, Livingston Fire Chief Christopher Mullin and his fellow club members for supporting this event and helping to make the inaugural community rocket launch a success.
Since founding the LHS Rocketry Club in 2022, co-founders Yang and Qi have led their teams to compete in the American Rocketry Challenge (ARC) , which challenges middle and high school students to design and build powerful rockets and parachute systems that are able to safely carry an egg nearly 1,000 feet in the air and back to the ground.
The LHS Rocketry Club, which currently consists of approximately 20 members, encourages any Livingston students interested in STEM to join the club and participate in the ARC next season.
