EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) — A Utah State football player with strong ties to New Mexico State has died in an apparent drowning in northern Utah, numerous media outlets are reporting.

Andre Seldon Jr., 22, died Saturday, July 20 in what is being called a drowning accident at Porcupine Reservoir in Cache County, according to the Deseret News and other media outlets in Utah.

The reservoir is located about 80 miles north of Salt Lake City and 40 miles south of the Idaho border.

Seldon joined the Utah State football program this summer, transferring from New Mexico State, and was scheduled to start classes this fall, according to the Deseret News.

A defensive back, Seldon was one of multiple players who followed interim USU head football coach Nate Dreiling from Las Cruces to Logan, Utah, this offseason after Dreiling was hired as USU’s new defensive coordinator and then interim head coach, according to the Deseret News.

Seldon was a team captain and two-year starter for New Mexico State. He initially headed to Texas Christian this spring before deciding to play at Utah State.

Seldon played for Dreiling when Dreiling was the defensive coordinator with New Mexico State.
