A group of rising fifth-graders produced podcasts during a two-day summer camp at Ossining High School in late July. The camp was part of a series of free media camps for middle and high schoolers offered by the Ossining Union Free School District.

The students picked the subject matter, planned their shows, worked with high schoolers from the radio club to produce it and record their shows in the studio. Topics included the culture of sneakerheads, the Olympics and Harry Potter.

“I think podcasting and media in general is a great outlet for kids at any age. I think that it gives them the ability to experience really hands-on learning and project-based learning that they don't get to experience in an everyday classroom. So, it also gives them a platform that they don't normally have to express their interests, goals and different aspects of things that they want to learn, so this really gives them the opportunity,” said Media Production Specialist Angela Carrasquillo, who oversaw the camp.
