Montana town’s economy withers due to lack of affordable housing
A slice of paradise in Montana is suffering economic disruption, but it isn’t a result of any political battles or environmental change. Instead, Seeley Lake’s problem lies in its lack of a centralized sewer system. The Missoula County community’s reluctance to come up with a plan to replace its septic system means no affordable housing can be built for working people. While high-end septic systems can service multi-family dwellings, local officials explain that they’re not cost effective for the type of housing developers would seek to build in the area. The solution? Only a sewer system will do. That lack of accommodation means Seeley Lake’s biggest employer -- Pyramid Mountain Lumber -- can’t attract enough workers to continue, and is closing the family-owned business which has been operating for 75 years. "To make the announcement to the crew was probably the toughest thing; I've got friends, family, you know, generations, good friends that work here. I had to tell them we're going to shut the doors," Todd Johnson, a third-generation lumber mill worker whose grandfather started the mill in 1948, told ABC News.

HORSE GULCH FIRE (Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest) Over the weekend, containment significantly increased on the Horse Gulch Fire near Canyon Ferry Reservoir, and as of Sunday morning, the fire is 80% contained. Crews are now focused on mop-up operations to extinguish any leftover heat along the eastern flank of the fire that could threaten containment lines in the event of adverse weather. Crews continue with suppression repair along the southern edge of the fire by redistributing debris berms created by fire line construction.

Farmer Finishers: Hot, Hot, Hot
When someone tells you to be cool, they're not kidding. In Farmer Finishers this week, a word of caution: anything and everything will start a fire. They are starting to get a handle on some of the largest fires in Montana. In the Lewis and Clark Forest, they have one about 25% contained, and the same with the one in Rosebud County. The drought of 2021 was hard on nearly all of state agriculture, which included a hay shortage. Now throw in a con man to further hurt family operations. Jory D. Parks of Logan, Kansas pulled a fraud on Facebook, advertising hay in large quantities for sale, and offering to deliver into Montana and Wyoming. He received advances from ranches desperate for hay for their livestock. You guessed it, Parks pocketed the funds for his personal and business use, without delivering the forage.
