A pedestrian struck by a vehicle and trapped underneath it was taken to a hospital Monday for treatment of his injuries.

The man was struck by a vehicle at 12:42 a.m. in the area of Willow Street east of the Long Beach (710) Freeway, said Long Beach police Lt. Royce Wexler. He became trapped under the vehicle.

"Paramedics from the Long Beach Fire Department arrived and treated a male adult pedestrian, who was transported to a local hospital with injuries to his upper body," Wexler said.

The pedestrian had stable vital signs, he said.

"Preliminary information indicated that the involved vehicle was being driven by a female adult and was traveling westbound on Willow Street, when the pedestrian entered the roadway from the north curb and was struck by the vehicle," Wexler said.  "Impairment and distracted driving are not believed to be factors in this collision."

    The investigation continued.
