On July 31, this year's Mississippi Valley Fair brings with it grandstand performances by a pair of Billboard-charting talents in Koe Wetzel and Priscilla Block, the former an acclaimed country rocker whose top-10 hits include this year's "Sweet Dreams" and "High Road" (featuring Jessie Murph), and the latter of whose country-pop song "Just About Over You" went viral on TikTok, reaching Nashville music executives who signed her to Mercury Nashville.
Deserta and Pony Bradshaw, July 27
A disparate pair of independent-music acts will take the stage at Davenport’s Raccoon Motel for two concerts on July 27, the first with the rockers of Deserta performing in support of last year’s album Don’t Dare Stop, and the second with Georgia-based folk-rock, country, and blues vocalist Pony Bradshaw celebrating the release of his new recording Thus Spoke the Fool, scheduled for release on August 16.

With the project of married couple Beth Hataway and Johnny Veres delivering, according to Americana UK, “an atmospheric folk sound [that] will capture your attention and draw you in emotionally,” the touring artists of Electric Blue Yonder headline a July 28 concert at Davenport’s Raccoon Motel, the group praised by Slant as “a diamond-bright exploration of rock’s past, present, and hopeful future.”
2024 Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival, August 1 through 3
An eagerly awaited weekend of live performances returning to the Quad Cities for the 53rd time, the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival will, from August 1 through 3, again enjoy residency at the Rhythm City Casino Resort Event Center. For 2024, the Davenport venue will host performances by eight local and national jazz acts: Chicago Cellar Boys; El Dorado Jazz Band; Graystone Monarchs; Mike Davis’ New Wonders; Paul Asaro & His Rhythm; T.J. Muller’s Jazz-O-Maniacs; The Dooley Band; and the Bix Youth Jazz Band.
KMAQ sold to Iowa-based Coloff Media
For the first time in 66 years, KMAQ will be under different ownership. Jim Coloff of Coloff Media has purchased the Maquoketa-based station from Dennis Voy and announced plans to continue operating the station. The station will continue to cover area events and retain all current employees through its transition in ownership, which will also bring some new faces to town.

One person flown to the hospital after Charles City auto accident
CHARLES CITY, Iowa – One person was flown to the hospital after a two-vehicle accident Wednesday morning. Charles City Fire Rescue says it was called to the accident south of town around 5:15 am and arrived to find two cars with significant damage. One person was already receiving medical treatment by AMR Ambulance Service. A second person had to be removed from a vehicle using hydraulic spreaders and cutters.

Gov. Reynolds announces FEMA’s approval of Disaster Recovery Temporary Housing Program, opens applications
(Des Moines) Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has announced that the state’s Disaster Recovery Temporary Housing Program is now open for applications following approval from FEMA. The program aims to provide temporary housing, including recreational vehicles and travel trailers, for up to six months at no cost to Iowans whose homes were severely damaged, destroyed, or deemed uninhabitable in counties under a federal disaster declaration. As of now, the eligible counties are Adair, Adams, Buena Vista, Cedar, Clay, Emmet, Jasper, Lyon, Montgomery, Obrien, Plymouth, Polk, Sioux, and Story. Additional counties may become eligible as the recovery process and damage assessments continue.
Two years in, staffing troubles still dog Iowa 988 call center
(Radio Iowa) – This week marks the second anniversary of the launch of 9-8-8, the national hotline for mental health emergencies. A report by the mental health advocacy organization Inseparable finds 87-percent of Iowa’s calls are being answered by in-state call centers, which is near the 90-percent goal. Emily Blomme is the C-E-O of Foundation 2 Crisis Services in Cedar Rapids, which operates one of Iowa’s two call centers. She says the turnover rate is almost at 50 percent. “Some of that is people who think that they can do the work or think they want to do the work, and they get into it and they don’t want to do the work, or it’s too hard,” Blomme says, “or they have their own lived experience and activates them in a way that they just weren’t anticipating.”
