Boulder City Council is on summer recess. There will be no meetings July 4, 11 or 18. • Possible conversion of the Boulder Municipal Airport. Two measures, the result of citizen petitions, will be on November’s ballot seeking to decommission the airport and redevelop it into housing. Boulder’s Chamber of Commerce, which represents business interests, last week announced its opposition to the initiatives. Council’s discussion is scheduled to last over an hour.

Tall, large-flowered, and with a distinctive seed pod covered with tubercules, the “Showy Milkweed” — Asclepias speciosa Torr. — is very widely distributed in Golden open spaces and gardens. Usually found in mountain meadows, open woodlands, and along streams, the Showy Milkweed also spreads to roadsides and other disturbed sites. It is easily grown in a garden from seed, though the seed may not germinate in the first year.

The department started at roughly the same time as the Coors Brewery and the School of Mines both here in Golden.
