DUNBAR, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Dunbar Police Department Chief Brian Oxley announced his decision to step down from the role of police chief on Sunday.

A statement shared to social media on Sunday confirmed the development, which according to the former chief is one which comes with profound sorrow.

“Serving the people of Dunbar has been one of the greatest honors of my life. This is not just one of the best communities I’ve had the privilege to be a part of, but also one of the best most dedicated and professional police departments I’ve known”

While the reasoning behind the decision was not explicitly stated in the announcement, it was noted that the decision was not one which was taken lightly.

“My heart is heavy, knowing that I won’t be there every day, standing shoulder to shoulder with the brave men and women who make this department what it is. But I am confident that this decision, difficult as it is, is the right one for me at this time.”

Oxley did not confirm what his professional path would hold going forward, though the former chief did declare that he would not be leaving the city behind, stating,

“I will always be around to support this community and this department in any way I can… Thank you, Dunbar, for allowing me to serve you.”
