White Cane Awareness Day set for October

BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Details have been announced regarding the upcoming Annual White Cane Awareness Day event in Beckley.

Scheduled to coincide with Blindness Awareness Month in October, White Cane Awareness Day is held each year to raise awareness around topics such as blindness, technological accessibility, and other pertinent issues.

The event is scheduled to take place from 12:00pm to 2:00pm on October 11, 2024, at Beckley’s Word Park .

Featured as part of the event will be activities such as a white cane obstacle course, blind trivia, blindness simulation experiences, and in-depth discussion regarding issues such as eye conditions, accessible technology, and blindness, as well as other educational opportunities.

“Participation will allow individuals to become more active and integrated into the community of Beckley, but, in subsequence, provide ample opportunity to interact with the blind community,” says event founder and coordinator, Cole Sweeney. “This year’s event will garner participation from Lions Club-District-29-C, with a mobile eye clinic, screenings of which are free and screen for Glaucoma, visual activity, and visual field.”
