Will Blake Corum Unlock the Los Angeles Rams RB Passing Attack? Kyren Williams Thinks So

Los Angeles Rams third-year running back, Kyren Williams went on the Rich Eisen Show and was asked about how he thought he could improve on his stellar rookie campaign. He mostly spoke about improving on the things he did so well last year, particularly in creating more explosive plays, not just in the ground game, but in the passing game as well.

“Being able to create more explosives in the run game and also being able to create more explosives in the past game,” Williams explained to Eisen, “I’m super excitedcthat we went to go draft Blake Corum . Somebody who can run the ball very well. Hopefully that will allow me to get to the slot or allows me to just run routes out of the backfield, so that I’m able to really showcase my skills in the game.”

Kyren Williams as a Threat in the Passing Game

Coming out of Notre Dame, Williams was seen as a dual-threat pass-catching back. In his two seasons as a starter, he caught 3.2 passes for 28 yards per game. So far as a Ram he has caught 1.9 passes and 12.8 yards per game.

From what he said, it can be assumed that a big reason for that was because they wanted to limit his usage to the rushing attack. With the addition of Corum, Williams feels he will be more freed up to run routes out of the backfield or from the slot.

Los Angeles Rams Haven’t Had a Pass Catching Back Since 2019

This is something that went missing from Sean McVay ‘s repertoire when Todd Gurley ‘s knees gave up on playing football. This leaves a whole aspect off the table for one of the great offensive minds in football. William’s paltry 206 yards receiving last year is the most by a Rams running back since Gurley’s 2019 season when he posted 207. 30 running backs posted better season receiving totals.

If this in fact does unlock the Rams RB receiving game, it could unlock the offense as Gurley did in his two seasons as an elite pass catcher. McVay recognized Gurley’s ability in his first season as head coach. McVay increased Gurley’s targets by 50 percent from 2016 to 2017 and it led to 788 yards receiving and Gurley winning Offensive Player of the Year.

Williams will have a lot to prove to end his season with that, but the more offensive arrows McVay has in his quiver, the better this offense can operate.
