Bronny James Reveals Celebrity Inspiration Behind Choosing Lakers' Number

Bronny James, during his rookie introductory press conference on Tuesday, revealed that his choice of jersey number nine for the Los Angeles Lakers was inspired by rapper Juice WRLD.

"Juice has just been a big part of me keeping calm," said Bronny, explaining his decision to honor the late rapper. "So yeah, just paying homage to him especially because he passed."

Fans initially speculated that Bronny chose jersey number nine because it resembles an upside-down six, a number famously worn by his father, LeBron James, throughout his illustrious career.

The number 9 meant a lot to Juice WRLD as well.

“999 represents taking whatever ill, whatever bad situation, whatever struggle you're going through and turning it into something positive to push yourself forward,” he said in an interview with MTV.

Juice WRLD, born Jarad Higgins, gained fame as an American rapper, singer, and songwriter, known for blending hip-hop with emo influences in his music.

His breakout single "Lucid Dreams" in 2018 propelled him to widespread recognition. Tragically, Juice WRLD passed away on December 8, 2019, at the age of 21, due to a seizure caused by an accidental overdose of oxycodone and codeine.

After being selected by the Los Angeles Lakers as the 55th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Bronny James has remained in the spotlight.

Earlier on Tuesday, Bronny also agreed to sign a multiyear guaranteed rookie contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, as reported by The Athletic's Shams Charania.

This signing solidifies his place as one-half of the first-ever father-son duo in NBA history alongside his father, LeBron James, keeping him at the forefront of fans' thoughts.
